GW Global Health Legacy Fellowship

  • Envisioned by generous George Washington University (GW) graduates who are passionate about global health and inspired by their own experiences, this fellowship will provide the opportunity for current members of the GW community to develop projects and cultivate partnerships in settings outside of the United States to improve health in low- and middle-income countries.
  • This fellowship opportunity is designed to provide financial and administrative support for a resident (PGY2 or above) or fellow to develop and implement a global health project. 
  • Up to four fellowships will be awarded each academic year

Vision

  • The GCCA Fellows will engage in a 12-month project in partnership with a colleague at a health care or academic institution in a low- or middle-income country.
  • The project will lead to initiatives that will improve access and delivery of healthcare by patients in the developing nations as enabled by education, health services research, or system engineering.  
  • The fellowship project will ideally serve as a foundational catalyst for future funded initiatives. 
     

Application Guidelines - Deadline: June 1, 2025

  •  All applicants must include a partner/mentor from the collaborating institution abroad.   
  • Resident or fellow applicants must include a GW-based faculty mentor as part of the project team. 
  • The fellowship must include a significant period of time spent in the host country by the recipient, accompanied by a meaningful project with planned and attainable outcomes.
  • A successful proposal will include SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Bound)1 related to both academic outputs and programmatic goals.
  • Ideally, this investment will be a catalyst for an existing partnership to accelerate shared goals and facilitate ongoing partnership and productivity beyond the time of the award.
     
  • Application deadline: June 1, 2025

  • Applications should be 1500 words (maximum) in length and include the following elements: 
    • Background regarding existing partnership
    • Project Rationale 
    • SMART Goals
    • Brief biosketch of applicant   
    • Brief biosketch of GW mentor 
    • Brief biosketch for in-country mentor  
    • Timeline for planned activities
    • Time commitment to project 
    • Plan for academic output as a component of the project
    •   Consideration of sustainability beyond the 12-month time of the fellowship
       
  • Anticipated award notification date: July 1, 2025;  
  • Anticipated start date: September 1, 2025


Finances

  • A budget and budget justification (no more than 1 page) must be provided as part of the application.  Awards ranging from $10,000 - $50,000 per year will be considered. 
  • Up to a one-year experience, as adjudicated by ACGME requirements will be considered. Budget may be allocated to travel and research expenses.


Eligibility

To be eligible the principal investigator must be either: 

  • A current GWU resident or fellow, working with a physician with a GW SMHS faculty appointment or GW SMHS clinical faculty appointment.
  • Grants will be awarded for 1 year with the potential for a no cost extension into a second year;
  • A progress report is required after 6 months, and a final report is required within 1 month of completion.
